People use kratom to treat many illnesses such as pain, coughing, diarrhea and diabetes. It is commonly consumed by chewing the fresh leaf or by grinding dried leaf into a powder, or by making it into a tea.

Active ingredients

Kratom has many active compounds, at least 40 compounds have been isolated, including alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenes, phenolic compounds. The main active ingredients of kratom are the alkaloids mitragynine, which can be found 66% of the total alkaloid content in Thai kratom leaves.

Scientific support

Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, active compounds in kratom, were found to have pain relief effects by binding to opioid receptors like opium, morphine, and codeine. The clinical study found that consumption of kratom will increase pain tolerance.
Mitragynine exerts an antidepressant effect and anti-inflammatory effect.

Safety

Case reports of serious toxic effects or death are rare. There are usually occur in people who use high doses of kratom or use it in combination with other drugs such as morphine, codeine, amphetamine, haloperidol, diphenhydramine. Common presenting symptoms of Kratom poisoning were palpitation and seizure.

Regulations

In the Thailand, Kratom was removed from the narcotics list on Aug 24 and people can now grow, possess, consume and sell the leaves.

Side effects

Many Thai users experience constipation after using kratom; however, they will chew a leaf without swallowing, drink high amounts of water, or eat fruits and vegetables to prevent these side effects. Anorexia, weight loss, and insomnia are common among long-term kratom use. In addition, long-term users may become thin, have dry mouths, and their skin darkens. People who discontinue using Kratom may have withdrawal syndrome. These symptoms include aggression, the flow of tears, wet nose, insomnia, fatigue, inability to work, chest discomfort and muscle aches.
